Why I Left Teaching to Start and Eco-friendly Cleaning Business

By Kristin Whiting, Owner of RedButton Cleaning

After 33 years as a Special Education Intervention Specialist and Elementary School Principal, I did something many people considered unexpected: I started a cleaning business.

Teaching was not just a career for me — it was a calling. I loved working with students, supporting families, and helping children grow. But as I approached retirement age, I realized that I wasn’t ready to stop working altogether. I was ready for a change — something that still let me help others, stay active, and take pride in a job well done.

The Unexpected Joy of Cleaning

I’ve always enjoyed cleaning. For years, I cleaned houses on the side — during college, after work, on weekends. There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning a messy room into a peaceful space. It’s a kind of transformation that reminds me of what I loved most about education: making a difference, one person at a time.

When I launched RedButton Cleaning, I wanted it to be more than just a service. I wanted it to reflect the values I brought from my years in education: integrity, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to help people feel supported in their daily lives.

Eco-Friendly and People-Focused

We use eco-conscious products whenever possible because I believe in protecting the health of our clients, their families (including pets!), and the planet. I’ve seen firsthand how traditional cleaners can irritate allergies, trigger asthma, and leave behind unnecessary chemicals. Our preferred products — like Sal Suds and Dr. Bronner’s soaps — are safe, effective, and smell amazing.

At RedButton, we also believe in paying fair wages. Many companies rely on underpaid contractors. We don’t. Our Cleaning Technicians are employees, not gig workers, and we aim to get every technician to at least $20/hour by their 90-day anniversary. We train carefully, work in teams, and use detailed checklists to deliver consistent 10/10 service.

What I’ve Learned

Starting this business has shown me that it’s never too late to try something new. Just like in education, you don’t need to be perfect — you just need to care deeply and show up ready to do your best.

I’m grateful every day to be building something meaningful in my hometown of Westerville and across Central Ohio. Whether it’s a weekly house cleaning, a deep move-in clean, or a helping hand with our Home Concierge services, we’re here to make life just a little easier — and a whole lot cleaner.

Before you Hire another cleaner read this

Meta Description:
Before you hire a cleaning company in Columbus, Ohio, read this essential guide to avoid common mistakes and get the best value. Learn what to ask, what to expect, and why RedButton Cleaning stands out.

If you’re thinking about hiring a cleaning company in Columbus, Westerville, Gahanna, or New Albany, hit pause.

Because here’s the truth: not all cleaning companies are created equal. While some will leave your home gleaming and fresh, others may leave streaks on your mirrors, hair on your floors, and frustration in their wake.

At RedButton Cleaning, we believe in full transparency. Whether you choose us or not, we want you to be an informed buyer. So before you click "Book Now" with any cleaning service, read this first.

1. Not All Cleaning Companies Are Actually Companies

Surprise: many “cleaning services” you see online are actually just individuals working gig jobs.

There’s nothing wrong with solo cleaners, but there’s often no insurance, no training, no background checks, and no accountability when things go wrong. If someone gets injured in your home or damages your property, you could be liable.

🔍 What to ask:
“Are your technicians employees or independent contractors? Are they insured and background-checked?”

At RedButton Cleaning, all our cleaning technicians are W-2 employees—not random contractors. We’re fully insured, bonded, and background-check every team member.

2. “Cheap” Isn’t Always a Deal

If a quote sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Companies offering $60 cleans often:

  • Rush through homes in 1 hour

  • Rely on tips to supplement low wages

  • Use low-quality or unsafe products

  • Cut corners by skipping hidden or hard-to-reach spots

💡 Think of it this way: if a company charges $60 for two hours of cleaning, how much are they paying the technician after expenses? $10/hour or less?

At RedButton, we believe paying a living wage results in happier, more consistent service—and it shows in our results.

👉 Learn more about our mission to support our technicians: Why We Strive for Living Wages →

3. Ask for the Checklist

A professional cleaning company should have a written checklist of what’s included in your cleaning—and what’s not.

Without one, you're relying on guesswork.

📋 At RedButton Cleaning, we offer detailed checklists for:

  • Maintenance Cleaning

  • Deep/Initial Cleaning

  • Move-In & Move-Out Cleaning

  • Custom Concierge Services

You’ll always know exactly what to expect—no surprises.

4. Eco-Friendly Isn’t Optional Anymore

Many companies still use harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia, which can damage surfaces, trigger allergies, and harm pets and kids.

We believe cleaning should make your home healthier—not just look cleaner.

🌿 RedButton technicians use:

  • Sal Suds (a pine-scented, plant-based cleaner)

  • Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap

  • Hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants

  • Baking soda scrubs

  • Dawn dish soap (biodegradable formula)

We also avoid products with artificial fragrances, phosphates, or VOCs.

5. Clarify the Payment Terms Up Front

Some companies don’t make it clear:

  • When you’ll be charged

  • Whether you need to tip

  • What their cancellation policy is

🚫 Red flags: Cash-only, no receipts, unclear terms

✅ At RedButton Cleaning:

  • We send digital estimates and invoices

  • Accept secure online payments

  • Never require tipping (though it's appreciated)

  • Have clear cancellation policies with no hidden fees

6. Do They Respect Your Time?

Ever book a cleaner for 10 AM and they show up at 1 PM—or not at all?

Time is money, and your schedule matters.

🕒 RedButton technicians are trained to arrive on time, every time. We text you when we’re on the way, and we give estimated windows for larger cleans so you’re never left wondering.

And yes—we pay our techs for their drive time between homes and their time on-site. That’s how we build a reliable, respectful team.

7. They Should Offer More Than Cleaning

Your needs don’t stop at vacuuming and mopping. What if you also need:

  • A quick trip to the store

  • Your car cleaned out

  • Help with laundry or pet care

  • Holiday prep and decorating

🧺 That’s where our Home Concierge Services shine.

We offer customizable hourly help starting at $75/hour. Perfect for busy professionals, seniors, new parents, or anyone who just needs a right-hand helper.

👉 Learn more about RedButton Concierge →

8. Check the Reviews—Especially the Names

Reviews are one thing. But detailed reviews that mention technician names? That’s a trust signal.

Look for comments like:

“Kristin’s technician Avery did an amazing job. He got behind my oven and even organized my cleaning supplies!”

👀 Real names. Real service. Real accountability.

📣 Leave us a Google review and mention your tech by name, and we’ll send you a $10 Starbucks gift card for every referral that books with us!

9. Do They Offer a Satisfaction Guarantee?

What happens if something’s missed or you're not happy?

With some companies, the answer is: “Too bad.”

With RedButton Cleaning, we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If something isn’t right, contact us within 24 hours and we’ll make it right—no extra charge.

That’s how confident we are in our team and our systems.

10. Finally: Do They Treat You Like a Person?

This one’s hard to measure—but easy to feel.

Do they respond to your emails promptly? Do they answer questions respectfully? Do they seem to genuinely care about your home?

We treat every client like a neighbor—because many of you are our neighbors. We’ve lived and worked in Columbus for over 20 years, and we’re proud to build a business that’s community-rooted and values-driven.

Bi-Monthly or Monthly Cleaning - Which is Better for Busy Columbus Residents?

If you're a busy homeowner in Columbus, Westerville, New Albany, or Gahanna, chances are you’ve asked yourself this question:
Should I book a bi‑weekly house cleaning or stick with a monthly service?

At RedButton Cleaning, we hear this all the time from clients juggling work, school drop‑offs, soccer practice, and everything else that fills a modern Ohioan’s schedule. And while both options have benefits, there’s a reason we recommend bi‑weekly cleanings—even if monthly cleanings come with a higher price tag (yes, 50 % more per visit!). Here’s why.

💸 Why Monthly Cleaning Costs 50 % More Per Visit

You read that right—our monthly maintenance cleanings are approximately 50 % more per visit compared to bi‑weekly appointments. But why?

It comes down to time, buildup, and effort. A home that hasn't been professionally cleaned in four weeks typically has:

  • More dust and allergens

  • Grime buildup in kitchens and bathrooms

  • More vacuuming and scrubbing required

  • More time spent restoring order, not just maintaining it

Our cleaning technicians have to spend significantly more time bringing your space back up to standard. It’s not your fault—life happens! But that’s why monthly cleans aren’t just spaced out, they’re more labor‑intensive, and we have to price them accordingly.

✅ What’s the Best Schedule for You?

There’s no one‑size‑fits‑all, but let’s compare bi‑weekly vs. monthly cleaning in real‑life terms:

Bi‑Weekly Cleaning (Every 2 Weeks)

  • Keeps your home consistently fresh and sanitary

  • Perfect for families, pet owners, or anyone with allergies

  • Less time needed per visit (so lower cost overall)

  • Prevents buildup in high‑traffic areas like bathrooms and kitchens

  • Maintains “that clean feeling” all the time

➡️ Recommended for busy households, homes with kids or pets, and clients who want a consistently tidy space.

Monthly Cleaning (Every 4 Weeks)

  • Better than nothing, but allows for more buildup

  • Takes longer per session due to dust, grime, and clutter

  • Not ideal for people with sensitivities or high foot traffic

  • Requires clients to tidy and clean between visits to maintain cleanliness

➡️ Recommended for low‑traffic homes, minimalist lifestyles, or budget‑conscious clients.

🧽 Why Clean More Often?

Here’s what happens when you clean regularly instead of letting grime pile up:

  1. Improved indoor air quality – dust, mites, and allergens are kept in check

  2. Fewer stains and permanent damage – grime removed before it sets in

  3. Better mental clarity – a tidy home often reduces stress and improves mood

  4. Lower long‑term cost – shorter, more efficient cleanings reduce the need for pricey resets

🌱 Eco‑Friendly Maintenance Makes a Difference

At RedButton Cleaning, we don’t just show up with harsh chemicals and disposable wipes. We believe in eco‑conscious cleaning that’s effective and safe for:

  • Your children

  • Your pets

  • The planet

Our core cleaning caddies include:

  • Sal Suds – biodegradable, all‑purpose cleaner with a light pine scent

  • Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap – invigorating and antimicrobial

  • Baking soda scrubs for tough spots

  • Hydrogen peroxide cleaners for safe, effective disinfection

You can even customize your clean or supply your own products. Learn more about our eco‑safe approach in this article about Sal Suds.

🧾 Transparent Pricing: What to Expect

Our pricing is based on square footage, home condition, and service frequency. On average:

  • Bi‑weekly clean (3 bed/2 bath, ~1900 sq ft): $125 – $150

  • Monthly clean (same home): $185 – $225, due to increased effort

What $150 of Housecleaning will get you in New Albany, Ohio

Wondering what a professional cleaning service can really deliver for $150? At RedButton Cleaning, we believe in transparency, high standards, and giving our clients real value for their investment. If you're in New Albany, Ohio, and considering a house cleaning service, this guide walks you through exactly what to expect from a $150 cleaning with us.

We offer a wide range of services including maintenance cleaning, deep cleans, move-in/move-out cleaning, and Concierge Services. For many families, $150 goes a long way—especially when you tidy between visits and work with a company that prioritizes quality over shortcuts.

What Does $150 Cover?

Clients often ask: “How much can I get cleaned for $150?” The answer depends on:

- Square footage – A home around 1900 sq ft can be partially or fully maintained depending on cleaning frequency

- Type of clean – Maintenance cleans are more affordable than deep or specialty services

- Condition of the home – Tidy homes take less time and allow us to focus on deeper sanitation and shine

- Time and number of technicians – We match team size to your home’s needs to get the most done efficiently

Real-World Example: 3 Bed / 2 Bath, 1900 Sq Ft in New Albany

Let’s look at a common scenario: a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in New Albany, around 1900 square feet. This family keeps the home picked up between visits—dishes done, clutter managed, laundry folded. In this case, a $150 cleaning provides an impressive level of service during a standard maintenance clean.

Here’s what we typically accomplish:

- Full wipe-down of all kitchen surfaces and appliance exteriors

- Microwave cleaned inside and out

- Sanitization of bathroom toilets, tubs, sinks, and countertops

- Mirrors and glass wiped clean

- Dusting of baseboards, furniture, windowsills, and light fixtures

- Floors vacuumed and mopped in all rooms

- Spot-cleaning of doors, light switches, and handles

- Trash bins emptied and relined

- Beds tidied, blankets straightened

Add a Bit More, Get Even More Value

If you’re open to a slightly larger budget or alternate visit types, we can include upgrades like:

- Inside of the oven or refrigerator

- Baseboard scrubbing

- Windows (interior) or sliding glass doors

- Extra detail work in high-traffic zones

- Light organizing or personal task help through our Concierge Services

Why We’re Not the Cheapest—and That’s a Good Thing

At RedButton Cleaning, we pay our cleaning technicians a living wage and deliver consistent, checklist-based service. Our team is background-checked, trained, and brings the “Wow Factor” into every visit.

We use eco-conscious supplies such as Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds and hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants to ensure your home is not only clean—but also safe for children, pets, and chemically sensitive surfaces.

We won’t underbid a job just to get it. We’d rather overdeliver than underperform. When you hire us, you’re investing in your home, your time, and your peace of mind.

Client Spotlight: A Family in New Albany

One of our longtime clients in New Albany is a busy household of four in a 3-bed, 2-bath home with around 1900 square feet. They keep things picked up during the week and book a $150 cleaning with us every other Monday.

What they get in return:

- Sparkling bathrooms and kitchen

- Floors cleaned and sanitized

- Dust managed before it builds up

- Time to enjoy their weekends without cleaning chores

They’ve even added an occasional Concierge Service visit for help with seasonal closet organizing and pet care while they travel.

"The best investment we’ve made this year! We get time back as a family, and the house has never looked better."

We’re pulling back the curtain and showing you exactly what’s inside the caddy of a RedButton Cleaning technician. If you live in New Albany, Westerville, Gahanna, or anywhere in Northeast Columbus, this insider peek could change the way you think about house cleaning forever.

Our technicians don’t just show up with a vacuum and a prayer—they arrive with science-backed, eco-conscious tools that clean powerfully and safely. Here’s what we keep stocked, and why it matters to your home, your family, and our planet.

🧼 1. Sal Suds – The Star of the Show

Every RedButton technician swears by Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds—a pine-scented, all-purpose cleaner that’s both biodegradable and tough on grime. From kitchens to baseboards, it cuts grease without harmful chemicals.

  • Why we love it:
It’s effective, safe on most surfaces, and a little goes a long way. Plus, it’s gentle enough for homes with pets and kids.

✨ 2. Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap – For That Crisp, Clean Feel

For bathrooms and entryways, our techs sometimes add a bit of peppermint soap—another gem from Dr. Bronner’s. The natural peppermint oil leaves a clean scent that feels like a breath of fresh air.

  • Use it for:
Bathroom sinks, door handles, and anywhere you want a quick refresh.

🧽 3. Barkeeper’s Friend – The Secret Weapon for Shine

You know those dull stainless steel sinks and grimy bathtubs? Barkeeper’s Friend restores shine without scratches. It’s one of the few powders we trust, and it works wonders on:

  • Stove tops

  • Showers

  • Tubs

  • Stainless steel

  • Porcelain sinks

Pro tip: Always use gloves with this one. It’s strong stuff!

🌿 4. Baking Soda Scrub – The Gentle Scouring Power

Our techs use baking soda (sometimes pre-mixed with a drop of dish soap) to scrub:

  • Inside ovens

  • Tile grout

  • Shower floors

  • Burnt pans (if a client requests kitchen help)

It’s odor-neutralizing, non-toxic, and safe for nearly every surface in your home.

💧 5. Dawn Dish Soap – Not Just for Dishes

Yes, that blue bottle. We use original Dawn dish soap as a degreaser in kitchens and for prepping stuck-on pans or stovetops. It’s also used in our DIY mop solutions when we’re cleaning hard floors.

  • Why we choose it:
It cuts through grease and rinses clean.

😷 6. Hydrogen Peroxide Bathroom Cleaner – For Germ Zones

For areas like toilets and shower walls, we add a Lysol-brand hydrogen peroxide cleaner to our toolkit. It disinfects without chlorine bleach and is effective against mold and mildew.

  • Bonus: No overwhelming chemical smell!

🧤 7. Personal Protective Gear (PPE) – Safety First, Always

We don’t play games with safety. Every RedButton Cleaning technician carries and uses:

  • Disposable gloves

  • Reusable or disposable masks (especially in dusty or post-illness homes)

  • Shoe covers or designated indoor shoes

🪣 8. Microfiber Cloths – The Unsung Heroes

We stock color-coded microfiber cloths to prevent cross-contamination:

  • Blue = kitchen

  • Green = general surfaces

  • Yellow = bathrooms

  • White = glass and mirrors

Each cloth is washable, reusable, and far more effective than paper towels at capturing dust, dirt, and bacteria.

🧹 9. Eco-Friendly Mop & Vacuum Setups

Each cleaning technician brings:

  • A compact, high-suction vacuum with HEPA filters

  • A dual-chamber mop system using microfiber heads and eco-safe solution

  • Optional dry mops or dusters for hardwood and laminate floors

Explore our Maintenance and Deep Cleaning Checklists →

🧺 10. Tools You Won’t See Us Bring

We never bring:

🚫 Bleach (except when a client specifically requests and provides it)
🚫 Ammonia-based glass cleaners
🚫 Harsh artificial fragrances or aerosol sprays
🚫 Any products from home not listed in our approved supply list

🔄 Why the Right Tools Matter

A professional-grade cleaning kit isn’t just about shiny bottles—it’s about consistency, safety, and results. We train every RedButton Cleaning technician to understand:

  • How to clean thoroughly but gently

  • Which product is right for each surface

  • How to avoid damage or cross-contamination

  • How to leave a lasting impression (not just a clean house)

Sal Suds: The Eco-friendly Powerhouse for Every Room in your House

By Kristin Whiting, Owner of RedButton Cleaning

At RedButton Cleaning, we’re committed to delivering a high-quality, eco-conscious clean that’s safe for your family, your pets, and the planet. One of our favorite tools in our cleaning caddy is Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds—and for good reason. This concentrated, biodegradable cleaner is a true multi-tasker and a staple in our mission to provide top-notch house cleaning in Columbus, Ohio, and surrounding communities like Westerville, New Albany, and Gahanna.

What is Sal Suds?

Sal Suds is a concentrated all-purpose cleaner made by Dr. Bronner’s. Unlike their castile soap, which is oil-based and best for body care and light cleaning, Sal Suds is a detergent—designed to cut through grease and grime without leaving a residue. It’s made with plant-based surfactants and essential oils, has a fresh pine scent, and is gentle enough for frequent use while being powerful enough for tough jobs.

Curious about the ingredients? Sal Suds scores an A rating on the EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning for its safety and eco-friendliness.

Why We Love It

At RedButton Cleaning, we’ve tested countless products over the years, but Sal Suds stands out. Here’s why it has earned a permanent spot in our eco-cleaning kit:

  • ✅ Non-toxic and biodegradable

  • 🐶 Safe for pets and kids

  • 💧 Highly concentrated – a little goes a long way

  • ✨ Works on nearly every surface

  • 🧼 Rinses clean without streaks

How We Use Sal Suds in the Homes We Clean

Whether you’ve booked a deep clean, maintenance clean, move-out clean, or our customized maid service, you’ll benefit from the cleaning power of Sal Suds.

1. Kitchens

Sal Suds is amazing on:

  • Countertops

  • Backsplashes

  • Appliance exteriors

  • Floors

  • Cabinet fronts

We dilute just a teaspoon in a spray bottle filled with water for an effective degreasing cleaner that makes stainless steel sparkle.

2. Bathrooms

We love it for:

  • Sink basins

  • Tubs and tiles

  • Shower glass

  • Floors

  • Chrome fixtures

It cuts through soap scum and hard water spots beautifully while leaving behind a fresh pine scent.

3. Floors

Sal Suds is safe for sealed hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and tile. Just a few drops in a bucket of warm water delivers a streak-free clean.

4. Dusting and General Cleaning

We use it for:

  • Door frames

  • Baseboards

  • Light switches

  • Shelves

  • Walls and doors

It lifts grime without the harsh chemicals often found in store-brand cleaners.

5. Laundry Boost

While not a replacement for detergent, a few drops of Sal Suds in a load of laundry (especially for work towels or pet bedding) helps cut grease and odors.

6. Move-Out or Deep Cleans

For those heavier-duty cleans in Columbus or surrounding areas, Sal Suds helps us tackle built-up grime in places that haven’t seen a good scrub in a while. If you're moving or need a reset for your home, book a move-in/move-out cleaning or deep clean today.

A Greener Way to Clean

Our mission at RedButton Cleaning is to use cleaning products that are both effective and environmentally responsible. We know families are increasingly concerned about what’s being used in their homes. Sal Suds helps us confidently offer a solution that works—and aligns with our values.

We’re proud to offer:

  • 🌿 Eco-conscious residential cleaning

  • 🏠 Move-in and move-out cleanings
