Why I Left Teaching to Start and Eco-friendly Cleaning Business
By Kristin Whiting, Owner of RedButton Cleaning
After 33 years as a Special Education Intervention Specialist and Elementary School Principal, I did something many people considered unexpected: I started a cleaning business.
Teaching was not just a career for me — it was a calling. I loved working with students, supporting families, and helping children grow. But as I approached retirement age, I realized that I wasn’t ready to stop working altogether. I was ready for a change — something that still let me help others, stay active, and take pride in a job well done.
The Unexpected Joy of Cleaning
I’ve always enjoyed cleaning. For years, I cleaned houses on the side — during college, after work, on weekends. There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning a messy room into a peaceful space. It’s a kind of transformation that reminds me of what I loved most about education: making a difference, one person at a time.
When I launched RedButton Cleaning, I wanted it to be more than just a service. I wanted it to reflect the values I brought from my years in education: integrity, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to help people feel supported in their daily lives.
Eco-Friendly and People-Focused
We use eco-conscious products whenever possible because I believe in protecting the health of our clients, their families (including pets!), and the planet. I’ve seen firsthand how traditional cleaners can irritate allergies, trigger asthma, and leave behind unnecessary chemicals. Our preferred products — like Sal Suds and Dr. Bronner’s soaps — are safe, effective, and smell amazing.
At RedButton, we also believe in paying fair wages. Many companies rely on underpaid contractors. We don’t. Our Cleaning Technicians are employees, not gig workers, and we aim to get every technician to at least $20/hour by their 90-day anniversary. We train carefully, work in teams, and use detailed checklists to deliver consistent 10/10 service.
What I’ve Learned
Starting this business has shown me that it’s never too late to try something new. Just like in education, you don’t need to be perfect — you just need to care deeply and show up ready to do your best.
